WENATCHEE – Following the recent wildfires in North Central Washington, Chelan County Fire District 1 has been awarded a FEMA grant to protect our community by increasing structure resilience and defensible space in prioritized areas of the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI).
The grant funds allow homeowners to replace highly flammable wood shake roofs with ignition resistant Class A roofing materials and improve the defensible space around their homes. The project is rolling out this spring in areas of the WUI including the Lemaister, Eaglerock, Rolling Hills and Sunnyslope neighborhoods along with neighborhoods on the western side of the district close to Number 1 and Number 2 Canyons.
Qualifying homeowners will receive up to $10,000 in grant funds as a rebate once the roof replacement and defensible space elements of the project are complete.
To learn more about this project contact Hillary Heard, the fire district’s Community Wildfire Liaison at hheard@chelancountyfire.com for call the station at 509-662-4734.
